Mrs. Heather Thomas is in her 9th year of teaching. She is a passionate 2nd-grade teacher at Stonebridge Elementary in Spanish Fort. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (K-6) and Collaborative Special Education from the University of South Alabama. Her teaching journey started differently than most.
“I had a few high school teachers who didn’t make learning feel inspiring. Those experiences had a huge impact on me. They taught me what kind of teacher I didn’t want to be,” Mrs. Thomas shared. “More than anything, they made me realize how deeply a teacher can affect a student’s life. That’s when it really clicked. I wanted to be the kind of teacher who made kids feel seen, supported, and excited to learn. I knew I wanted to make a difference in the world, and teaching felt like the most powerful way to do that.”
With heavy emphasis on teaching leadership skills and building confidence, Mrs. Thomas focuses on coming alongside each child to discover their worth and self-confidence. Kindness is the foundation of he classroom community and fostering strong relationships with her students, both inside and outside the classroom, is important to her.
“I tell my students I chose this job to change the world. Teaching leadership skills means a lot to me. If, 20 years from now, I run into one of my students at the grocery store and they say, “Mrs. Thomas, I remember you taught me how to be proactive and kind,” I’ll know I’ve done my job,” she said. “When they ask how that’s possible, I explain that by making a difference in their lives, they can pass on what they’ve learned to others. Those people will continue to share it, creating a ripple effect that can ultimately change the world.”
Mrs. Thomas enjoys implementing fun, engaging, student-led activities that build teamwork and encourage creativity, confidence, and a love for learning. She does this by incorporating movement, technology, giving students voice and choice, and including projects and presentations to make lessons more meaningful.
“I’ve been blessed to have an inclusive classroom almost every year I’ve been teaching. Inclusive education helps break down barriers and encourages empathy and understanding among students of all abilities,” explained Mrs. Thomas. “Almost every year, I get to watch students of all needs be accepted, respected, and supported by their peers. Watching a 7-year-old with autism confidently participate in class discussions and seeing their peers cheer them on gives me a deep sense of joy and hope. It truly empowers all students! These kids are constantly reminding me of the power of connection, growth, and purpose.”
Heather Thomas and her husband Chris have three children – Abby (18), Annabella (15), and Lincoln (5). Chris is the Lead Pastor of Port City Refuge in Downtown Mobile. They enjoy traveling, oing to the beach, and spending time together. On the weekends, you can often find them serving the community.
