“I believe students learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process rather than simply listening,” shared Jennie Gartman, also known as Mrs. Jennie to her students at Renaissance School of the Eastern Shore.
Mrs. Jennie graduated from Leavell College and is passionate about project-based, hands-on learning for her students. She teaches science, history, and literature to students in grades 1–5. She believes that through this style of learning, students can explore and discover a love for lifelong learning.
“I make learning meaningful and relevant by connecting real-life experiences and giving them the opportunity to move, explore, and discover concepts,” she explained. This school year, she will have each group of students for two-hour blocks. They will rotate through whole-group lessons, learning stations, and projects that will allow them to grow and thrive during the time she spends with them.
“Jennie Gartman exemplifies the heart of Renaissance School of the Eastern Shore through her dedication to serving students and families with excellence, compassion, and integrity,” raved Courtney Klotz, the executive director of the private school. “Her contributions have helped strengthen our community and awaken the potential in those she serves.”
Building a caring community with her students and their families is vital to their success.
“Being a parent has shown me how important building trust is, not only with our students but with their parents,” said Mrs. Jennie. “Thankfully, my school helps us build great relationships with our students’ parents by planning incredible family events so we can all get to know each other.”
One thing that makes Mrs. Jennie’s teaching experience unique is that her entire family joins her during the week at RSES. Her husband, Rich, pastor of Journey Church in Loxley, is joining her on staff this year. Their four children also attend RSES — Reese (15), Caffrey (14), Ryker (10), and Westlyn (9).
When it comes to balancing the demands of her professional and personal life, Mrs. Jennie is still working on finding the right balance.
“I’m still growing in this area and believe that every teacher continues to grow in this area,” she explained. “I understand the importance of balance, and taking care of my family allows me to enter the classroom refreshed and ready to give my students my best. It’s about learning how to work smarter, manage my time well, and learn new things.”
When she’s not at school, Mrs. Jennie and her family enjoy coffee dates, movies, Sunday afternoons at the beach, and visiting OWA.
