John is also a student that embodies school spirit. He was the only student to attend every single football game and cheered the Warriors on no matter what the score was or the outcome at the end of the game. Spanish Fort High Chess Team Reigns Supreme

The Spanish Fort High Toros Chess Team was named the 2024-2025 Mobile/Baldwin Scholastic Chess League Champions. This victory marks an incredible accomplishment for the team, as it is only their second year of competition. This year’s championship-winning Varsity team includes standout players: Kevin Judice, Kurusharan Kumaresan, Heinz Williams, and Ethan Spuler.
In addition to the team’s success, two members received individual awards at the Championship. Junior, Kevin Judice was awarded the prestigious Morphy Award, which is awarded to the top individual player in the entire league. Sophomore, Kurusharan Kumaresan was named to the All-Star team, which includes the top five players in the league. These recognitions further highlight the strength and talent of the SFHS chess team.
The team’s journey began just a year ago when former student, Price Beall, a 2023 graduate, founded the SFHS Chess Club. Beall created bylaws and completed all the necessary paperwork to ensure the club’s official establishment. His dedication laid the groundwork for the success that has followed. This year, Kevin Judice stepped up as the club’s president. Under his leadership, the team not only excelled on the board but also expanded, with Kevin playing a key role in recruiting new players and growing the club’s presence at the school. Kevin’s leadership and individual success were integral to the team’s victory this year.
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this victory is that the Spanish Fort Toros made history by becoming the first public school team since 2008 to win the Mobile/Baldwin Scholastic Chess League Championship. This accomplishment is a testament to the hard work, leadership, and teamwork of all the players involved.
Along with the Varsity team’s success, the JV team also earned a top spot, securing 3rd place in their division, proving the future potential of the SFHS chess program.
Congratulations to the SFHS chess team for making history and bringing home the Championship!

Daphne High School is proud to celebrate William Abernathy, Marygrace Sebastian, Walker Stejskal, and Nathan Thompson for earning the prestigious honor of National Merit Finalist!
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. The program recognizes the top high school students in the nation for their exceptional academic achievements. Less than one percent of high school seniors across the country earn this distinguished honor.
The selection process for scholarship winners is rigorous and considers multiple factors, including:
– Academic record (course load, difficulty, breadth of subjects, and grades)
– PSAT/NMSQT scores
– Student essay
– Leadership and contributions to school and community activities
School official’s recommendation and overall characterization of the finalist
Students enter the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which serves as an initial screening of over 1.3 million entrants each year. Only the most outstanding students meet the program’s rigorous entry and participation requirements.
Becoming a National Merit Finalist places these students among the top academic performers in the country. Their dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence have truly set them apart.
Join us in congratulating William, Marygrace, Walker, and Nathan on this incredible achievement!
