St. Michael Catholic High Senior Receives Rare Dual Service Academy Appointments

St. Michael Catholic High School is proud to announce that senior Samantha Grace Kokoszka has accepted a Fully Qualified Appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. This prestigious achievement follows the rare distinction of receiving appointments to two of the nation’s elite service academies, as she was also offered a Fully Qualified Appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Following a rigorous application and nomination process, Congressman Barry Moore personally called Samantha to congratulate her on her achievements and inform her of the appointments. After careful consideration of both offers, Kokoszka officially declined the appointment to West Point to join the Navy’s Class of 2030.
A Fully Qualified Appointment is the culmination of a process that requires meeting stringent academic, physical, and medical standards, as well as securing a formal nomination. Receiving offers from both the Army and the Navy is a distinction reserved for only a handful of candidates nationwide each year.
“We are incredibly proud of Samantha Grace for this monumental achievement,” said Dr. Andrea Williamson, Principal of St. Michael Catholic High School. “Receiving appointments to both West Point and Annapolis is a clear reflection of her exceptional character, academic rigor, and leadership. Samantha embodies the very best of our Cardinal values, and while she had two incredible paths before her, we are thrilled to see her choose to serve our country at the Naval Academy. She is a true trailblazer for our school community.”
At St. Michael, Kokoszka has been a standout student-athlete and leader, recently being named the Bryant-Jordan Region 1 Class 4A Scholar-Athlete winner. Her commitment to the Naval Academy continues a tradition of excellence at St. Michael, as students continue to be recognized on the national stage for their service and academic prowess.

St. Michael Catholic High Celebrates Two Students in Bryant-Jordan Scholarship Program
St. Michael Catholic High School is proud to announce that two of its outstanding seniors have been named Region 1 Class 4A winners in the prestigious Bryant-Jordan Student-Athlete Program, marking a significant milestone in the school’s history.
Samantha Grace Kokoszka has been named the Region 1 Class 4A Scholar-Athlete winner, honoring her excellence in both academics and athletics. Nick Thomas Russo has been named the Region 1 Class 4A Achievement winner, recognizing his ability to overcome obstacles while excelling in athletic endeavors.
This is the third year in a row a St. Michael student has won the Achievement category, but this marks the first time in school history that Cardinals have swept both the Achievement and Scholar-Athlete Region 1 awards simultaneously.
“We are incredibly proud of Samantha and Nick,” said Dr. Andrea Williamson, Principal of St. Michael Catholic High School. “These awards confirm what we already knew—that they are exemplary students and athletes who exhibit our Cardinal Values in the classroom, in athletic competitions, and in our community. To have winners in both categories is a testament to the character and drive of our student body.”
Both students will now advance to the next stage of the competition. Their files will be reviewed by a selection committee to determine the overall winner in the Class 4A state classification.
The Bryant-Jordan Student-Athlete Program was created in 1986 by the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the Alabama High School Athletic Association to recognize exceptional student-athletes across the state.
