“Teaching was never my original plan. My first career was in business administration, and for a long time, I thought I was on the right path,” shared Halie Williams, a third-grade teacher at Pine Grove Elementary. “I was successful, but I realized that the work was missing a crucial element: human impact.”
After substitute teaching for a season, Mrs. Williams decided to return to school. She already had a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and added a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education. She has been teaching for nine years and has plans to pursue a secondary education certificate in the near future.
“The most profound realization for me was the incredible satisfaction of watching a lightbulb moment—that instant when confusion turns into understanding,” she shared. “In my first career, success was measured in completed work and spreadsheets. However, in education, success is measured in academic growth, increased confidence, and the desire for a child to look forward to school. I became a teacher because I discovered that my true passion wasn’t just to do great work, but to empower others to do their own great work.”
Mrs. Williams has built a classroom centered on relationships and mutual respect. She emphasizes creating a safe environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes. Kindness is a fundamental value. She believes emotional safety and connection should come before content delivery.
“The most challenging aspect of teaching isn’t the curriculum itself, but navigating the invisible challenges students bring into the classroom,” she said. “It is the constant need to be an emotional regulator before I can be a content expert. It can be extremely difficult to overcome these problems on a daily basis. However, I overcome this by prioritizing relationship over compliance.”
There are many ways Mrs. Williams works to build relationships with her students. A few of her favorite ways are to find something that she can connect with each student about. It could be sports, hobbies, or something as simple as their favorite color.
The achievement of ESP Teacher of the Month is one Mrs. Williams is deeply grateful to be awarded for. It affirms her commitment to teaching and empowering the next generation.
“This award represents the hard work we all put in, and it inspires me to continue building a classroom where every student feels seen, safe, and ready to learn,” she said appreciatively. “Thank you to everyone who nominated me—it means the world to know my passion for teaching is making a difference.”
Halie Williams has been married to her husband, Wylie, for 15 years. Their daughter, Kenzlie, is in 9th grade and loves to cheer, and their son, Wylie Jr., is in third grade and enjoys playing baseball. The family’s favorite thing to do is watch Alabama football while relaxing on the back porch and eating game-day snacks.
