For the past twenty years, Melia Schacherer has been a cornerstone in The Learning Tree at First Fairhope. She began several years ago as a Pre-K4/K5 teacher and now has the privilege of teaching kindergarten.
“I wouldn’t be in the position I am today if it wasn’t for Mrs. Melia. Fifteen years ago, she was my son’s teacher. It was his first experience in a school setting, and she made it so special. Her passion for teaching was clear the moment we walked into her classroom, and because of her, he entered kindergarten well-prepared and with a genuine love for learning,” shared Laurie Jensen, who is now the Preschool Director at First Fairhope. “Her kindness and example inspired me to begin subbing at The Learning Tree, and, well—fifteen years later, here I am as the preschool director at First Fairhope.”
Mrs. Melia has truly enjoyed her transition to teaching Kindergarten at The Learning Tree, which was implemented roughly three years ago.
“It’s been such a rewarding journey—watching these little ones grow and helping prepare them for what’s next,” said Mrs. Melia. “Kindergarten can be a big adjustment for young children, so I strive to create a balanced classroom environment. I incorporate plenty of fun, movement, and opportunities to be loud and expressive—alongside quieter moments focused on learning and growth. Finding that balance helps keep students engaged, comfortable, and excited to learn.”
To keep her students engaged, our Teacher of the Month works diligently to keep learning interactive and memorable. For example, when she is teaching sight words, she is also incorporating hand gestures to connect the concept.
“Some of my favorite moments in teaching are when a child has that “ah-ha” moment—when they read their first word or complete their first math equation,” Mrs. Melia exclaimed. “Seeing their faces light up with pride and excitement is truly unforgettable and reminds me why I love what I do.”
When Mrs. Melia’s students leave her classroom, her greatest desire is for them to feel unconditional love. Her goal is to lay a strong foundation of confidence, kindness, and a love for learning that they can carry with them for years to come.
Melia Schacherer has been married to Scott for 40 wonderful years. They have three daughters—Stacey, who lives in Germany; Megan, in Colorado; and Savanna, in Northern Alabama. She is also a proud grandmother to five grandbabies! Melia loves planning trips to visit them and spending as much time as I can with my family. She also loves digging into Pinterest for new and creative classroom ideas.
