As our children get older, there are certainly moments that can tug at our heartstrings. We miss some of the little things—the bedtime stories, the playground adventures, and the days when they needed us for just about everything. But along with those bittersweet moments comes something unexpected: a little more time. As children become more independent, parents often find themselves with opportunities to rediscover old interests, explore new passions, and reconnect with parts of themselves that may have been put on hold during the busy years of raising a family.
This is the season of life where I find myself now. Like many parents, I have started asking myself what activities bring me joy, challenge me creatively, and help me connect with others. I’ve been experimenting with different hobbies and interests, trying to discover what truly fills my cup socially, creatively, and personally. The challenge, however, is knowing where to begin. There are so many opportunities available in our community that it can be difficult to know what’s out there.
As I was talking with a friend about my quest to find a new hobby, she quickly admitted that she was feeling the same way. She was ready to add a little more fun, friendship, and adventure to her life as well. That conversation sparked the idea for this month’s brand-new guide, Learn • Play • Connect. Our team set out to create a resource that would help adults discover local lessons, classes, clubs, sports, and activities designed just for them.
While our guides typically focus on opportunities for children and families, we thought it was time to shine a spotlight on parents, too. After all, moms and dads deserve fun too. Whether you’ve always wanted to learn Mahjong, sharpen your Bridge skills, pick up a paintbrush, take a dance class, join a book club, or finally give Pickleball a try, you’ll find a wide variety of options in our new Learn • Play • Connect Activity Guide for Adults. We hope it inspires you to try something new, reconnect with an old passion, or simply spend time doing something that brings you joy.
In last month’s issue, we featured an article about family hobbies and the many benefits they offer. One of the things I love most about this new guide is that many of the activities can become family experiences as well. They also support some of the healthy habits discussed in Rebecca Hastings’ feature, The Big 3 for Healthy Kids, reminding us that active, engaged families often build stronger relationships and healthier lifestyles.
Speaking of taking care of ourselves, Shannon Dean offers another valuable reminder in her feature this month, The End of Summer Crunch: Why Starting Back-to-School Prep in July Saves Your Sanity. I know, it feels far too early to begin thinking about back-to-school while we’re still enjoying summer break. As we head into July, I wish each of you a fun, safe, and memorable Fourth of July. This year marks the 250th birthday of the United States, making our celebration even more meaningful. Thank you to the men, women, and families who serve our country and help protect the freedoms we enjoy every day.
