“Julia Otto is not just a teacher; she is an icon at Christ the King Catholic School,” shared Amanda McCallam, the Director of Admissions of Advancement at Christ The King Catholic School (CTKCS). “With three decades of teaching experience, Julia has cultivated a teaching philosophy that goes far beyond typical classroom expectations. For her, teaching isn’t just about the academic curriculum; it’s about nurturing the whole student – mind, body, and soul.”
Ms. Otto currently teaches Kindergarten at CTKCS in Daphne, AL. She obtained her Bachelor in Elementary Education from Springhill College in 1982 and hasn’t stopped teaching since. It is a true calling. She has been teaching for 33 years in the Archdiocese of Mobile.
Fostering strong faith in her students is just as important to Ms. Otto as watching them strengthen their academia daily. In her classroom, she couples her love for art and reading by encouraging her students to explore their creative side.
“She gives the students an opportunity for self-expression through creativity and literature. In her classroom, she encourages her students to explore their artistic talents and dive into the world of storytelling,” Mrs. McCallam shared.
“The growth she sees in her students’ reading abilities and eagerness to share their artistic creations is a testament to her dedication and influence.”
Ms. Otto says there is no greater joy in her life than watching her students grow in multiple facets each year. She works hard to connect with each of her students, and she brings an abundance of joy and laughter to anyone in her space. She desires that her teaching makes an impact beyond the classroom walls.
“Ms. Otto embodies the qualities of a truly exceptional educator: passion, dedication, and a genuine love for her students,” Mrs. McCallam said.
Sharing a little advice for those who might be early in their teaching careers, she says, “Be open to learning and change. No class or year will ever be the same. You have to be able to adjust and pivot to meet the needs of your students and their families.”
Receiving the award of the Eastern Shore Parents Teacher of the Month left Ms. Otto truly humbled. “There are so many amazing teachers at Christ the King and on the Eastern Shore,” she said. “Being recognized for this is special!”
Julia Otto has two children and four grandchildren. Outside of teaching, she enjoys reading, going to the beach, and spending time with her family.
